How to hire a tire shop
A tyre shop fits, balances, repairs and aligns — where the questions worth asking are about what is included in the fitted price and whether you actually need an alignment.
What the job usually involves
- New tyre supply and fitting.
- Balancing and rotation.
- Puncture repair, where the damage is repairable.
- Wheel alignment.
- TPMS sensor service and replacement.
What to ask before you agree to anything
- Is the price per tyre fitted — mounting, balancing, valve, disposal, tax?
- What is the manufacture date on these tyres?
- Do I actually need an alignment, and can you show me the readings?
- Is there a road hazard warranty, and what does it cover?
- Are my TPMS sensors being reused or replaced?
Warning signs
- A low advertised tyre price with mounting, balancing and disposal added at the till.
- An alignment sold without before-and-after readings.
- Tyres several years old sold as new without mentioning the date code.
- A puncture repair refused without explanation when it is in the repairable area.
Common questions
Do I need an alignment with new tyres?
Only if the alignment is actually out — new tyres do not require one by default. Ask to see the measured readings before and after. A shop that can show you numbers outside specification is answering the question; one that sells it automatically is not.
Can a punctured tyre be repaired?
Generally yes when the puncture is in the central tread area, is small, and the tyre has not been driven flat. Sidewall and shoulder damage is not repairable, and a plug alone without a patch from the inside is widely considered a temporary fix.
How old is too old for a tyre?
Tyres carry a date code on the sidewall and degrade with age even unused. Many manufacturers and vehicle makers publish a recommended maximum age — check yours, and check the date code on tyres being sold to you as new.
How does Region Beacon work for tire shops?
You describe the job once. The first nearby business that takes it gets your details and contacts you; nobody else does. You deal with whoever you pick directly, and you pay them directly — Region Beacon never handles the money and takes no commission, so nothing is added to your price for using it.
How do I know if a tire shop's quote is fair?
Get more than one. A single quote tells you what one business charges; three tell you what the job is worth where you live. Ask each for the same scope in writing, and treat a quote far below the others as probably missing something rather than a bargain.
