How to hire a plumber
A plumber handles water supply, drains and fixtures — leaks, blockages, water heaters, burst pipes and the pipework behind a kitchen or bathroom refit.
What the job usually involves
- Emergency work: burst pipes, major leaks, no water, sewage backing up.
- Repairs: dripping taps, running toilets, slow or blocked drains, failing shut-off valves.
- Replacement: water heaters, garbage disposals, toilets, taps, supply lines.
- Installation: fixtures and pipework for a new bathroom or kitchen.
- Diagnosis: tracing a leak you can hear or smell but cannot see.
What to ask before you agree to anything
- Is the price a fixed quote for this job, or an hourly rate plus parts?
- Is there a call-out or diagnostic fee, and does it come off the bill if I go ahead?
- Does the price include parts, or will those be billed separately?
- What is your licence number, and is the person doing the work licensed or working under someone who is?
- Do you carry liability insurance, and will you send proof?
- What happens if the repair does not hold — is there a warranty, and for how long?
- Who cleans up, and who is responsible if something is damaged getting to the pipe?
Warning signs
- A price quoted over the phone for a leak nobody has looked at yet.
- Pressure to decide immediately, especially with a "today only" discount.
- Cash only, no written quote, no invoice.
- A large deposit up front before any work starts.
- No licence number offered when you ask for one.
Common questions
How do I know if a plumbing quote is fair?
Get more than one. A single quote tells you what one business charges; three tell you what the job is worth in your area. Ask each for the same thing in writing — the work included, whether parts are covered, and whether the price is fixed or an estimate. A quote far below the others is usually missing something rather than being a bargain.
Should I pay a plumber before the work is done?
A deposit for materials on a large job is normal. Paying the full amount before any work happens is not. For ordinary repairs, payment on completion is standard, and you should get an invoice showing what was done and what was charged.
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Water you cannot stop, sewage coming back up, or no water at all. If water is actively escaping, find your main shut-off valve and close it before you call anyone — that single step decides whether this is a repair or a repair plus a floor.
How does Region Beacon work for plumbing jobs?
You describe the job once. The first nearby business that takes it gets your details and contacts you; nobody else does. You deal with whoever you pick directly, and you pay them directly — Region Beacon never handles the money and takes no commission, so nothing is added to your price for using it.
Are plumbers on Region Beacon licensed?
Region Beacon does not verify licences. Businesses enter their own licence number and it is shown as self-reported. Check it yourself with whichever body licenses this trade where you live — in Georgia that is the Secretary of State licence lookup, and it takes about a minute.
