How to hire a painter
A painter prepares and paints interior or exterior surfaces — and the preparation, not the paint, is what decides whether the job still looks good in three years.
What the job usually involves
- Interior: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets.
- Exterior: siding, trim, soffits, fences, decks.
- Preparation: filling, sanding, caulking, priming, masking.
- Repairs first: drywall patching, rotten trim replacement.
- Specialist finishes: cabinet spraying, staining, textured ceilings.
What to ask before you agree to anything
- How many coats, and is primer included?
- What preparation is in the price — filling, sanding, caulking?
- Which paint and finish, by brand and product line?
- Who moves and covers the furniture?
- How long between coats, and how long before the room is usable?
- What does the warranty cover — peeling, coverage, both?
Warning signs
- A quote that does not mention preparation at all.
- Paint quality left vague, or "contractor grade" with no product named.
- A price per room with no idea of ceiling height or wall condition.
- Exterior work scheduled regardless of weather.
Common questions
How many coats of paint do I need?
Two is standard over a similar colour. A dramatic colour change, a patchy wall, or bare drywall usually needs a primer plus two coats. Ask what the quote assumes, because "one coat" quotes are the most common reason a finished job looks thin.
How long does interior paint take to be usable?
Most modern latex paint is dry to the touch in an hour or two and safe for light use the same day, but it keeps hardening for two to four weeks. Avoid scrubbing walls or pushing furniture hard against them during that period.
When is the best time to paint the outside of a house?
Dry weather with moderate temperatures, and not in direct blazing sun on the surface being painted. Most products list a minimum application temperature — a painter working outside that range is gambling with your finish.
How does Region Beacon work for painters?
You describe the job once. The first nearby business that takes it gets your details and contacts you; nobody else does. You deal with whoever you pick directly, and you pay them directly — Region Beacon never handles the money and takes no commission, so nothing is added to your price for using it.
How do I know if a painter's quote is fair?
Get more than one. A single quote tells you what one business charges; three tell you what the job is worth where you live. Ask each for the same scope in writing, and treat a quote far below the others as probably missing something rather than a bargain.
