How to hire a locksmith
A locksmith opens, repairs, rekeys and replaces locks — a trade where the scam version is well documented enough to be worth knowing before you are locked out at midnight.
What the job usually involves
- Lockouts: home, car, business.
- Rekeying after a move, a break-up or a lost key.
- Lock repair and replacement, including deadbolts and smart locks.
- Key cutting, including transponder car keys.
- Safes, and commercial master key systems.
What to ask before you agree to anything
- What is the total price, including call-out, labour and parts?
- Is that price guaranteed, or an estimate that can change on arrival?
- Are you local, and what is your business address?
- What identification will you need from me to prove I live here?
- Do you take card, or cash only?
Warning signs
- A very low phone quote that becomes several hundred dollars on arrival.
- An unmarked vehicle and no company name.
- Immediately drilling a standard lock rather than picking it.
- Cash only, no invoice, no receipt.
- A generic dispatch number rather than a local business.
Common questions
How do I avoid a locksmith scam?
Get a full price on the phone including call-out, ask for the company name and address, and confirm the price again before work starts. The classic pattern is a very low quote, an unmarked van, a drilled lock and a bill many times the quote. Prefer a locksmith with a real local address you can look up.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving?
Rekeying is usually cheaper and is enough when the locks themselves are sound — it changes which key works without changing the hardware. Replace when the locks are old, damaged or you want a different grade or a smart lock.
Will a locksmith need to prove I live here?
A reputable one will ask for identification showing the address, or other proof of occupancy, before opening a door. Take that as a good sign rather than an inconvenience.
How does Region Beacon work for locksmiths?
You describe the job once. The first nearby business that takes it gets your details and contacts you; nobody else does. You deal with whoever you pick directly, and you pay them directly — Region Beacon never handles the money and takes no commission, so nothing is added to your price for using it.
How do I know if a locksmith's quote is fair?
Get more than one. A single quote tells you what one business charges; three tell you what the job is worth where you live. Ask each for the same scope in writing, and treat a quote far below the others as probably missing something rather than a bargain.
