How to hire an esthetician
An esthetician provides facials, waxing, peels and skin treatments — a service where a proper consultation about your skin and any medications matters before a first treatment.
What the job usually involves
- Facials and deep cleansing.
- Chemical peels and exfoliation.
- Waxing and hair removal.
- Extractions.
- Lash and brow tinting and shaping.
What to ask before you agree to anything
- What does the consultation cover, and do you ask about medications?
- What is in this treatment and what should I expect afterwards?
- Is there downtime, and how long?
- What should I avoid before and after — sun, retinoids, exfoliants?
- Are you licensed, and what training do you have for this specific treatment?
Warning signs
- No intake questions about medication, allergies or recent treatments.
- A strong peel offered to a first-time client without a patch test or a plan.
- Claims that a treatment will cure a medical skin condition.
- No aftercare instructions given.
Common questions
What should I tell an esthetician before a facial?
Any medications, particularly retinoids or isotretinoin, recent sun exposure, allergies, and any recent treatments. Several common medications change how skin responds to exfoliation and waxing, which is why a proper intake form exists. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, your doctor is the right person to advise on treatment.
How long before an event should I get a facial?
Not the day before. Extractions and exfoliation can leave skin red or purging for a few days, so most people book at least a week ahead of anything they are being photographed at.
Does waxing have to hurt?
It is uncomfortable, but technique, hair length and timing all change how much. Hair that is too short or too long is harder to remove cleanly, and an experienced technician will tell you the ideal length to grow it to before booking.
How does Region Beacon work for estheticians?
You describe the job once. The first nearby business that takes it gets your details and contacts you; nobody else does. You deal with whoever you pick directly, and you pay them directly — Region Beacon never handles the money and takes no commission, so nothing is added to your price for using it.
How do I know if a esthetician's quote is fair?
Get more than one. A single quote tells you what one business charges; three tell you what the job is worth where you live. Ask each for the same scope in writing, and treat a quote far below the others as probably missing something rather than a bargain.
